The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) is an application-oriented research institute in the fields of high-frequency electronics, photonics and quantum physics. It researches electronic and optical components, modules and systems based on compound semiconductors. These devices are key enablers that address the needs of today’s society in fields like communications, energy, health, and mobility. It covers the entire value chain from design to ready-for-delivery systems.

In the Joint Lab Integrated Quantum Sensors, we are looking for a research staff member for the development, assembly and characterization of an optical clock based on two-photon spectroscopy of rubidium vapor. The goal of this project is to realize a compact optical clock for demonstration on a small satellite mission. We are responsible for the development and qualification of the compact spectroscopy unit and the systems engineering of the payload for the small satellite.

Your activities

  • Within our team at FBH, you are responsible for the design and system engineering of the scientific payload for a small satellite platform.
  • You coordinate interface requirements between the subsystems of the payload and the satellite bus together with our project partners.
  • You develop and perform test procedures for electro-optical components and participate in their environmental qualification with respect to requirements of a small satellite mission.
  • You develop and assemble a development model of an optical clock payload and participate in its operation, automation and characterization in our laboratories.
  • Your tasks will also include the control of the processes for product assurance including the preparation of the corresponding documentation.

Your profile

You have completed a scientific university degree (master's/diploma) in physics or in engineering, e.g. aerospace, physical engineering, electrical engineering or a related natural science or engineering course of study. A doctorate in physics or a similar field with a focus on atomic physics or laser technology is desirable.

You are enthusiastic about physical-technical topics and have relevant knowledge in two or more of the following areas

  • Systems engineering, mechanical and electrical CAD, FEM simulations
  • Instrumentation, control systems, embedded systems
  • Space engineering
  • Optical frequency metrology, frequency combs, laser spectroscopy, optical clocks

You ideally have experience in project work, project coordination and industrial projects. The ability to cooperate with an interdisciplinary team as well as to work independently on own tasks is expected. A careful and structured way of working as well as a good knowledge of the English language are required.

Employment, remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund). The position can be filled immediately and is initially limited to two years.
