The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) in the Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V. is a leading international research institute in the fields of diode lasers, LEDs and microwave components.

On the basis of III/V semiconductors, it investigates and realizes components and systems for applications in communication, automotive and production technology, medicine and biotechnology, among others. It covers the entire production chain from design to ready-to-deliver systems.

The Joint Lab Diamond Nanophotonics at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH) is investigating techniques for the fabrication of novel photonic nanodevices in diamond. Such devices are employed for efficiently guiding and manipulating light on photonic chips and constitute the fundamental building blocks for the next-generation quantum photonic technology.

Large part of our efforts is the development of reliable processes that would allow for the manufacturing of high-quality photonic nanostructures in a reproducible and scalable way.

Your main task is to support such development by collecting the results of each fabrication step and comparing them with the employed process parameters and with the results reported in literature. Beyond that, there will be a variety of interesting assignment that let you get a first impression of work in nanophotonic fabrication.

Field of study: physics, engineering, nanoscience or similar.
Starting date: 2nd week of January 2021
Previous knowledge: basic knowledge of chemistry, electrical engineering, or solid-state physics, basic knowledge of a programming language (e.g. MATLAB or Python), previous experience in a chemistry, physics or nanoscience lab is recommended but not strictly necessary.
