The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut gGmbH, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik is a leading international research institute that studies diode lasers, LEDs and microwave devices.

On the basis of III/V semiconductors, it researches and implements components and systems for applications in communications, traffic and production technology, medicine and biotechnology. It covers the entire value chain from design to ready-for-delivery systems.

We are looking for a research staff member / PhD-Student for our Joint-Lab Photonic Quantum Technologies, which is part of the Integrated Quantum research group.

The proposed PhD project will focus on the fabrication and ion beam based nanostructuring of two-dimensional (2D) van-der-Waals heterostructures for the low-loss transport of highly confined polaritonic modes. A polariton is a quasiparticle that results from coupling between an electromagnetic wave (here: light in the visible and telecom range) and a dipole carrying excitation in matter. The project aim is to realize and study hybrid modes, that couple the extremely localized plasmon polaritons of one layer (e.g. graphene) with the low-loss phonon polaritons of the other layer (e.g. hexagonal boron nitride) of the heterostructure. The type of the coupling will be studied and varied in a systematic manner.

Cutting-edge helium ion microscopy will be employed by the candidate for the nanofabrication with accuracy < 5nm. The nanostructures fabricated within this project will subsequently be characterized in collaboration with project partners using confocal VIS and near-field spectroscopy. A complementary part of the research project entails mapping of hybrid modes using low-loss scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The candidate will be expected to evaluate and interpret the data comparatively across the different techniques using numerical modeling.

The proposed PhD project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and provides the chance to join the team of the DFG priority programme SPP2244 on the physics of van-der-Waals heterostructures (https://2dmp.tu-dresden.de/). 

Applicants are expected to hold a very good (top 20%) degree (Master or Diploma) in Physics within-depth knowledge of electrodynamics and solid state physics.

We are looking for a highly motivated student with strong problem solving skills, the ability to work independently and good organizational skills.  Knowledge in electrodynamic modeling (Comsol, Lumerical, Matlab) or focused ion beam technologies are a plus. Good command of English language is mandatory.

The position can be filled immediately and is initially limited to 3 years. Remuneration is based on TVöD (German federal government standard pay scales). Qualified women are particularly encouraged to apply. Severely disabled people with the same qualification will be given preference.
